Celebrating 12 months as a Living Wage employer!

We are celebrating one year as a Living Wage employer! The Living Wage Foundation is an organisation that campaigns for the concept that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.

As a company, Sheffield Sustainable Kitchens strongly believes that we have a responsibility to support our employees.

Embracing the Living Wage movement is one of the ways we do this. We firmly believe that people in employment should earn enough to live on. Working full time and still not being able to afford housing, childcare, food, and transport is not fair, and does not make sense. We pay a real living wage to our employees based on the cost of living – not just the government minimum.

What is the living wage?

Each year the government calculates a minimum wage. However, this wage is not calculated according to what employees and their families need to live. Instead, it is based on a target to reach 66% of median earnings by 2024.

The Living Wage Foundation produces a separate ‘living wage’ independently calculated, based on what people actually need to get by. They also produce a separate ‘living wage’ calculation for London.

Living Wage UK encourages all employers that can afford to do so to ensure their employees earn a wage that meets the costs of living, not just the government minimum. There are currently over 7,000 employers who have pledged to pay employees the real living wage – will you join them?
