We recently completed this beautiful kitchen-diner in Birmingham, featuring a lovely combination of materials.
Our clients asked us to redesign the layout of their kitchen-diner, to make the space work better for them. We made some significant changes, which involved adding bi-fold doors and changing windows and doors. Both of these have really improved the use of the space.
The previous kitchen wasn’t working hard enough for our clients and contained many awkward to use spaces. We made significant upgrades to the layout by adding a breakfast bar and bespoke deep drawers to the right hand end of the hob run. The breakfast bar increased storage space as well as adding seating, and the deep drawers provided more storage as well as a more functional worktop space and prep area.
We moved the oven into tall cabinetry making it easier to access and added an additional combi oven which freed up worktop space near the hob which previously housed a microwave. To complement the style of the kitchen, we replaced the two internal doors in the kitchen for nice oak doors, along with all the other internal doors downstairs in the house to match.
The worktop and cabinet space at the sink was widened, making it more open and easier to access. We also made the cabinets to the left of the sink at bespoke depths to make perfect use of the space without intruding – previously the wall unit stuck out which felt messy and cluttered. Open shelving on the hob run adds visual interest and helps soften the stepped back wall.
The centre of this kitchen features a reclaimed wooden worktop. The timber previously had a life as school lab benches but has been sanded back in our workshop to reveal the beautiful grain underneath.
For the rest of the kitchen our clients chose a high pressure laminate option. The laminate contains chipboard that is PEFC certified. This way we can be sure that is comes from proper environmentally managed and sustainable sources. Known as Duropal, this surface is hard-wearing and easy to maintain. Our clients now have a much wider hob and space to work around it which wasn’t there before. This has made cooking and prepping easier for them and a much more enjoyable activity.
We love the final result and the way this kitchen-diner in Birmingham has come together to produce a fantastic family space. The combination of materials and colours have created a calm and warm living area that looks great, as well as functioning brilliantly. For more kitchen inspiration, see our gallery page here.
