In Detail

We designed, created and installed this fabulous mid-century modern kitchen with a reclaimed wood worktop to fit a new space in this sustainable bungalow transformation.

Sustainable home

Our clients were relocating from London to Sheffield and were looking for a future-proofed sustainable retirement house which was light, warm, economical and easy to live in. The bungalow they chose had incredible views of the Peak District but needed a full redevelopment to re-work it and create better use of space internally.

Our brief was to both design and install the kitchen and a range of items for the interior — including the home office, bedroom wardrobes, utility room, drop down seat in the hallway and kitchen — from sustainable materials.

Mid-century modern

We took a style lead from the mid-century modern vibe of the house and used a traditional hardwood, iroko, as the featured timber throughout. Having reclaimed the iroko from school science labs, they were a very sustainable choice. To see another kitchen that features a reclaimed wood worktop click here.

There were also some interesting challenges along the way. We had to find a way to install the hob in front of the window. It was important to our client not to spoil the view with an overhead extractor while cooking. We used an induction hob with an integrated downdraught extractor to keep the clean lines.

Close collaboration

We also worked closely with the architect and builders from very early on in the whole transformation process. A fundamental part of this near-passive house was the bespoke insulation membrane. We worked closely with the other building contractors to keep this intact during the kitchen design and build.

The final result is a lovely light kitchen with sleek lines and a minimalist feel to it. This mid-century modern kitchen is bang up-to-date with appliances. With two ovens, a warming drawer a pantry and an induction hob with a downdraught extractor, the space is highly functional and carefully designed to aid flow throughout.

Our clients are delighted with their new kitchen and bespoke furniture commissions. See their testimonial video on our homepage.
